Our Helpline is run by trained volunteers, if you would like to join the team this is where you will find out more information about the role.

The role of the Helpline call operator is to provide information tailored to the needs of each enquirer, and to provide emotional support in an empathetic and empowering way.

Our Helpline Operators are all volunteers with experience of cancer either personally or indirectly.  After undergoing specialised training, each operator is given the responsibility of looking after the helpline one day a week or as back-up to cover holidays etc.

The requirements needed for this role are:

  • Good listening skills and the ability to obtain relevant information required to give the right assistance
  • Good supportive skills
  • Good organisation skills 
  • Good telephone manner
  • Good computer skills including use of email, internet and accurate input of information taken during calls onto a database 
  • Ability to work alone from home as well as with a team


Useful additional experience:

  • Personal knowledge of cancer or professional cancer experience
  • Professional therapist or practitioner
