Leaving a Gift

Legacy – Doing something amazing to help others and make a difference

So let’s talk about making a will – most of us put this off thinking perhaps that we have plenty of time to do it but somehow we never quite get round to it. It can be daunting and most people are not sure where to start.

There’s a lot of language around legacies which just makes it confusing so no wonder people just don’t get round to it. We are here to simplify things for you; put you in contact with people who can help you at a pace you want to go and answer any questions you might have.

Why make a will?

  • If you die without making a will, you give up your right to express your wishes as to who should benefit from your estate.
  • Many believe that it will automatically go to their next of kin – this is not always the case and law cases around intestacies can become costly and complex. The worst case scenario is that if you have no relatives or family and don’t make a will, everything you own will go to the government.
  • Giving a gift to charity can mean you pay less tax! Gifts to UK registered charities are exempt from Inheritence Tax. (It is important to discuss this with a solicitor as this might depend on individuals circumstances)
  • We would love you to think of supporting the work of Yes to Life by leaving us something in your will.  A gift in your will to Yes to Life, no matter how small, means that you can be part of changing the way people manage their lives with cancer; taking away the fear; providing support and information about their options; empowering them and giving them the best chance of reclaiming their health.

To help you we have created a couple of documents to get you started:

Take a look at our Will Planner Guide below or if you are not quite ready for the whole planner guide thing – we have created a straight-forward non-jargon leaflet which might be a good starting point.
