Coping with Cancer North East celebrated 30 years as a charity in 2012. Founded as a support group, Coping With Cancer North East exists to offer emotional support, practical help and information to those in the region with cancer, together with their friends and family. This can be at diagnosis, during treatment and also in end of life situations. The services are run by volunteers, most of whom have first-hand experience of cancer, and are all free of charge to the users. These services are offered at a number of different venues in the North East, including Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, and Durham/Northumberland. Coping with Cancer volunteers, counsellors and complementary therapists can be found in local hospices, in chemotherapy day units in most of the regional hospitals, in support groups and Drop Ins and on the end of a telephone.
The phone number is available for any who wish to contact the charity. Covid has impacted how services are provided. Counselling has restarted with the support of new cloud phone technology, and from September media tablets will be used to have secure video meetings. The charity is hoping to open their centre in Cramlington for members of the public to visit securely from September. This centre has been Covid assessed and correct PPE will be used as well as social distancing and regular cleaning. Their Auricular Acupuncture therapy, which can offer a respite from some side effects following radiotherapy and chemotherapy, will be restarted soon. As they had only moved into their new premises in Cramlington two weeks before lockdown, they are currently awaiting the finalisation of their licence from the local authority. They are hoping to have this service running by September. All of their complementary services have stopped due to government guidelines and advice from NHS risk assessments. They are hoping to offer these therapies in their Cramlington centre later in the year, and are currently looking for another site for delivery of these services south of the River Tyne.
