Dr Jay Harness is an internationally known breast surgical oncologist. He received both his MD degree and training in general surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He developed one of the first United States academic multidisciplinary breast cancer centers at the University of Michigan in 1985. Over the next 25 years he established three additional multidisciplinary breast cancer programs across the United States. He is the recipient of the National Consortium of Breast Centers 2024 Career Impact Award for his long and distinguished contributions to improving the care of breast cancer patients.
He is a Past-President of: The American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS), the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES) and Breast Surgery International (BSI). He has authored over 100 scientific articles and book chapters and has been the lead editor of three textbooks. He is the founder of Cancer Fitness, which is an educational website about the nature and value of Exercise Oncology Programs. (https://cancerfitness.org/)
Dr Harness is a founding member of the International Society of Exercise Oncology (ISEO). ISEO’s highest priority is changing the standard of care in oncology to include exercise medicine throughout the journey of cancer patients, from diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, and palliation.
