CYANA provides cancer support for the residents of Newham and surrounding boroughs. Qualified and experienced Counsellors offer one-to-one, couple and facilitated group support sessions and telephone counselling or advice. A cancer support self help/social group meets every Wednesday, there is an Asian cancer support group drop-in every Monday and an Asian link worker with language and cultural skills. They offer an information library of books and tapes including information for children. Complementary therapies are available at a small cost by fully trained and insured therapists who are members of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. They are an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their Ethical Framework.
They can accompany vulnerable or distressed patients to hospital consultations to provide moral support or to help patients to understand what is going on and what is to happen next. A support group is also run fortnightly (Muslim ladies group every other Tuesday).
CYANA provide free one-to-one counselling, in person or over the phone, for any cancer patient, carer or family member of a patient. They must live either in the London Borough, Newham or be registered with a Newham GP. Advice and advocacy issues relating to cancer patients are free to Newham residents. Opening hours are 9am to 4pm. Due to covid-19, only telephone counselling is available, face to face counselling, complementary therapies and support groups are currently suspended.
