My experience with cancer was not just a battle for survival—it was a transformative experience that led me to discover the profound power of giving back. Through my volunteer work with Yes to Life, I found a supportive community, and a sense of purpose that has enriched my life in ways I never imagined.
It all began unexpectedly, like a sudden storm on a clear summer’s day. The diagnosis came as a shock—a thunderbolt that shattered the illusion of invincibility and thrust me into uncertainty and fear. In the days and weeks that followed, I found myself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions—fear, anger, sadness, and overwhelming uncertainty about the road ahead.
Within the chaos of doctor’s appointments, medical tests, and treatments, I felt a deep need for connection and support. It was during this time of searching that I found Yes to Life. Their mission of empowering individuals with cancer to inform about choices resonated deeply with me.
When I reached out to Yes to Life, I was met with warmth and understanding. The team of dedicated volunteers on the Helpline listened to me and my feelings. That gave me the courage to navigate the uncharted waters of my cancer ahead.
From that moment, I felt a deep desire to give back for the kindness and support that had been extended to me to others going through the same experience. To be able to help, as there are so many of us out there waiting to find a friendly community. It was during this time that I made the decision to volunteer with Yes to Life, offering my time, energy, and expertise to support others. Little did I know that this decision would become a great opportunity for profound personal growth and transformation.
Perhaps the most significant benefit of my volunteer work with Yes to Life is the sense of community and connection I found along the way. Through the Wigwam cancer support groups, workshops, and events, I connected with fellow cancer patients who shared similar experiences and aspirations for holistic healing. These connections became a source of strength, support, and inspiration—a reminder that I was not alone.
I found that the act of giving back became a source of healing itself, allowing me to channel my energy into something positive and life-affirming. It was a transformative experience that helped me reclaim my power and agency in the face of cancer.
Yes to Life has not only supported me on my healing but has also provided me with an opportunity to give back and make a positive impact in the lives of others. Through my volunteering, I have discovered the profound power of service, community, and connection—a gift that has enriched my life in ways I never imagined.
By supporting others, I have found a sense of belonging that has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
