We Hear You

We Hear You (WHY) are a free counselling service for anyone affected by a diagnosis of cancer or other life-threatening illness. This includes family, friends and carers as well as patients. The counsellors are professionally trained, experienced and adhere to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or an alternative professional body. WHY’s vision is a world where therapeutic support is available when and where it is needed for everyone affected by cancer and any other life-threatening condition. WHY offer support across Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Jill Miller founded Positive Action on Cancer (PAC) in 1994 as a telephone helpline for women affected by breast cancer. This developed into a counselling service that later became We Hear You in 2016. In 2018, more than 4,300 counselling sessions were provided for children, young people and adults affected by cancer or any life-threatening condition.

Due to Covid-19 all counselling sessions are now taking place by telephone or online. Additionally, We Hear You has launched a specific crisis support service for people who have Covid-19, their loved ones and anyone bereaved by the virus. The Covid-19 crisis support service provides up to four telephone sessions with an experienced counsellor. It is not a counselling service, however those who access the Covid-19 service are able to go on the waiting list for counselling once telephone support has ended.
