Aga Kehinde, highly experienced oncology nurse specialist, discusses the need to escape proscriptive protocols and ‘re-humanise’ cancer care.
In her work in oncology, specialist cancer nurse Aga Kehinde has a deep recognition of the need of both staff and patients to experience more spontaneous human interaction, rather than being hidebound by repressive protocols which seek to systematise every aspect of care, thereby excluding genuine care – which of course is by its very nature impossible to systematise. And part and parcel of this urgently-needed ‘re-humanisation’ is the open recognition of the immense psychological and emotional challenges faced by both patients and staff within oncology. Aga wants nursing staff to have ‘permission’ to be more responsive, and to have the required confidence to respond to any situation without the need for a system directive.
