A Day at a Time – A Daily Blog of Life in Lockdown

For many of us this lockdown feels like a not unwelcome pause from the busyness of our usual lives but for so many others it is catastrophic threatening their mental health, personal safety and security or with the loss of loved ones in the most difficult of circumstances. While we are all in unfamiliar territory dealing with the uncertainty of it all we are by no means in the same storm.

Thoughts come that these reflections are self-centred and self-absorbed. I am writing from a perspective of someone who is in the fortunate position to have time to practice, write and be and have the uplifting and calming effect of the countryside around me. But I can recognise these as thoughts, knowing that we are all deeply connected and whether we are keyworkers or having to self-isolate because of health vulnerabilities we are all being asked to treat each other with care and compassion. Healing ourselves is a vital practice too, so that we can be there for those who have been traumatised from their work in the NHS or by the loss of loved ones when this period of our lives passes.

Our individual power to effect change may not seem like much, but remember, we are all interconnected: We are One. Powerlessness itself is an illusion. Every positive action we take, no matter how small, will have an impact.

The two Chinese characters for crisis are challenge and opportunity. With any challenge in life we tend to search for meaning and finding the learning in it is an empowering process. This pandemic is just such an opportunity. What is the message of the disease? What lessons can be learned about personal, social, and planetary health?
