I’m Kirsten Chick BA(Hons), DNN, mFNTP, mFHT, mBSIO – I qualified as a Nutritional Therapist in 2003 and have been providing nutritional support for people with and recovering from cancer ever since. I have worked with Yes to Life for many years now, speaking at conferences and running workshops, and also teach nutrition at East Sussex College, and write about nutrition – including my book, Nutrition Brought to Life.
I’m known for being good at explaining the science behind nutrition, and converting it into practical and manageable advice. I tailor everything to the individual, including appropriate support for the adrenals and nervous system, immune system, liver, microbiome and mitochondria, and whatever else comes up. Your relationship to food and to your body is also a priority. I’ve been through a cancer diagnosis myself, so I understand at least some of the dynamics around this.
With Kirsten you will receive:
1 x initial consultation (90 minutes) 2 x 60-minute follow-up session 1 x 30-minute follow-up session all at 4-6 week intervals or less.
After the initial consultation, You will receive written recommendations for diet, supplements, and lifestyle/naturopathic suggestions. We can also discuss any further tests that might be helpful where appropriate.
In the initial consultation, I take a detailed case history and provide recommendations – some there and then which you can get started with straight away, and the rest via email the following week. Review sessions are a chance to monitor how you’re getting on, and make any necessary changes as you progress.
You don’t need any specialist equipment. I will usually recommend supplements that you would need to pay for separately – but we can discuss what’s feasible for you and work within your budget. I may suggest some private blood, urine or stool tests, but these are always optional, and you may be able to get some of these free via your GP. Everything is adaptable to your situation.
If you need any additional support, such as an interpreter, the option to record sessions or have regular breaks in sessions etc. please let me know. You are also very welcome to invite someone to attend the sessions with you.
REGISTERED NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST INTEGRATIVE CANCER SUPPORT
It is now widely recognised that nutritional therapy is a valuable tool in cancer prevention and for support prior, during and post treatment. Being told you have cancer can be truly life changing: most patients feel that control over their life has been taken away from them.
My goal is to help my clients to feel heard and supported and to regain some of this lost control through food, self-care and lifestyle whilst helping them to navigate through the enormous amount of conflicting information that we are all exposed to on a daily basis. Whilst there are never any guarantees, there is ample scientific evidence showing that taking charge of our diet and lifestyle can help tip the balance in our favour.
Everybody is different, every diagnosis is different, therefore, every nutritional plan is tailored to my clients’ needs, circumstances and abilities.
I am a qualified Nutritional Therapist with a diploma from the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM). In 2016 I began lecturing in nutrition for CNM and became a senior lecturer in 2020. Post-graduation I decided to specialise in cancer nutrition, this was largely inspired by my father-in-law who sadly passed away from cancer. As a member of the British Society of Integrative Oncology, I base my approach on the latest evidence in the field of nutritional therapy and integrative oncology. I am also registered with The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (ANP) and with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council CNHC. I have completed an NTEC in Nutrition and Cancer from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition.
I am have recently completed Dr Nina Fuller-Shavel’s Systems Approach to Cancer course, which sets a new standard in cancer nutrition education in the UK. It is an evidence-based expertly led training programme that draws on Dr Fuller-Shavel’s extensive medical, scientific and integrative care knowledge, as well as systems biology and continually evolving understanding of cancer pathophysiology.
Please note that nutritional therapy is not designed to diagnose, treat or cure any disease, including cancer. Nutritional therapy is about supporting the body’s resilience and whole person wellbeing, and we always aim to work collaboratively with oncology services

About Wendy
Wendy is a registered nutritional therapist with over 20 years’ clinical experience. Training initially at the renowned Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London, Wendy went on to gain an honours degree in nutritional therapy from the University of Westminster where she trained using a functional medicine approach. She is a member of BANT (British Association of Nutritional Therapy and Applied Nutrition), registered with the CNHC (Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council), an AFMCP 2017 graduate (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice) and a member of the Institute of Functional Medicine.
Wendy’s interest in nutritional support for cancer developed 10 years ago when a close family member was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. This took her on a new path of research and learning around appropriate nutrition and integrated approaches for cancer. Seeing the importance and benefits of this approach first-hand, Wendy was inspired to incorporate cancer support within her clinic services. Since then, her own self-learning and research have been complemented with formal training in the field of integrated cancer care. Some particularly inspiring courses include the Institute for Optimum Nutrition’s ‘Nutritional Support Before, During and After Treatment’ in 2016, Biomedica International Oncology Summit 19-21 March 2021, Dr. Nina Fuller Shavel’s, 6-month ‘Systems Approach to Cancer’ training programme completed Dec 2021, ongoing courses and mentoring with The Peat Institute for Cancer Knowledge including Integrative Guide to Colon Cancer Oct-Nov 2021.
Wendy uses functional and nutrigenomic testing where appropriate, taking advantage of the latest advances in science to help identify nutritional deficiencies or systems imbalances and to gain an understanding of the potential impact some genes may be having on an individual’s biochemistry and physiology. Understanding the unique genetic makeup of an individual, and which of their genes can be influenced by nutrition, enables support to be further personalised to maximise health. It can also be empowering for clients to gain a greater understanding of their genes and which areas might need more (or less) attention. Wendy has completed training in the application of nutrigenomics with Nordic Laboratories/DNA Life in 2017 and more recently with Lifecode Gx and she continues to study this newly evolving and exciting field of health.
Until 2017, Wendy also worked with Age UK in Bromley & Greenwich setting up and running numerous health and nutrition projects within the community for older adults, men, and diverse communities including Nepalese, Indian and Sikh elders, and Afro Caribbean. She was instrumental in setting up one of the first ’Men in Sheds’ projects in the country, a project that addresses isolation and health needs of older men. She continues to be involved with Gurkha veterans’ health in Greenwich through delivery of health education and cooking workshops.
Wendy has been a helpline volunteer for ‘Yes to Life’ since 2017 and this role has served to enlighten and inform her clinical practice.
Wendy is offering a discounted cancer support package for Yes to Life as follows:
Nutritional Therapy and Coaching Sessions:
1x initial consultation (up to 90 minutes) with email summary
2x follow-up reviews (45 minutes) with email summaries
1x 15-minute phone call (total 2) between appointments to check progress
