A considerable body of evidence has built up to spotlight the way that people with cancer from different communities receive different levels of care and experience different outcomes – sometimes shockingly so.
Person-centred care holds the key to addressing these inequities, but acting in a truly patient-centric manner is fraught with challenges, many of which have yet to be addressed widely. Whilst the shortcomings in mainstream care when it comes to delivering person-centred care are widely acknowledged and documented, Nutritional Scientist and Integrative Oncology Practitioner Toral Shah – herself someone with cancer and from a minority culture – also highlights the self-reflective work to be done to make Integrative Medicine as equitable as it needs to be.
