COPES stands for Cervical, Ovarian, Perineal, Endometrial Support. The support group was launched in November 2005, as patients wanted local support for those affected by gynaecological cancers. The aims are patient support, raising awareness, research and education for the benefit of inpatients and outpatients who are affected by a gynaecological cancer, both at Southend and Basildon Hospitals.
They have in attendance at each support group two qualified complementary therapists who are both are fully trained nurses at Southend Hospital. They provide free complementary therapies. They also have a trained yoga instructor who offers a relaxation session. The website shows the dates of the support group, as well as the complementary therapies available.
Tai chi, yoga and relaxation are incorporated into their coffee mornings. MacMillan research has shown that gentle exercise, such as yoga and tai chi, aids recovery and can have positive effects on the after effects of chemotherapy.
The support group is free to attend, and everyone is welcome to bring a friend or family member along for the first meeting. A member of the committee may be able to meet and greet or assist with travel arrangements if someone were nervous about attending.
Acupuncture, Massage, Reflexology, Reiki.
